What Atelier Canvas provides
Atelier Canvas provides gallery presentation and software functionality, including collection discovery, playback, image sizing, frames, mats, lighting, and controls. Any app fee or feature purchase pays for this software experience. It does not purchase exclusive rights to museum artwork or data.
Artwork and metadata keep their own rights
The app selects images identified by their providers as public domain or openly licensed. Artwork, image reproductions, and descriptive text can have different rights. Public-domain and openly licensed museum material is not made proprietary by being displayed in Atelier Canvas. Source licenses and required credits remain applicable and are not replaced or restricted by our app license.
The app's software is subject to Apple's standard licensed application agreement, unless a different app license is supplied. That agreement does not replace the separate licenses or public-domain status of museum material.
Independent sources
SamEarth, LLC does not own, control, or verify every museum record. Content is displayed from independent sources without a guarantee of accuracy, completeness, availability, or suitability. Rights statements can change; consult the original museum record and source terms before reusing an image outside the app. A content disclaimer does not grant additional image rights.
Museum policies
- Art Institute of Chicago API licensing: designated public-domain images and open collection data; some descriptive text has separate attribution requirements.
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art Open Access API: eligible images and data under CC0.
- Cleveland Museum of Art Open Access: eligible public-domain images and collection metadata.
- Rijksmuseum Information and Data Policy: follow the license for each record, including any attribution requirements.
- National Gallery of Art image policy and Open Data Program: dataset licensing and image rights are separate; the app uses designated open-access images.
- Data Source: Yale Center for British Art. Follow its data and data services terms and image policy. Redistributed Yale data retains these terms; attribution and source links must be preserved.
- Wikimedia Commons reuse guidance: the app uses a curated set of public-domain reproductions; each file page identifies its source, author and applicable rights.
- J. Paul Getty Museum image policy: the selected Open Content images have explicit CC0 image rights. This does not apply to every Getty image or automatically license separate descriptive text. Subject and style tags added for the app are app-curated, not Getty classifications.
No endorsement
Museum names identify content sources. Atelier Canvas and SamEarth, LLC are not affiliated with or endorsed by these museums or Apple. Museum logos and trademarks are not licensed by the open-access status of artwork.
Availability and updates
Collections, museum APIs, and image services can change or become unavailable. NGA, Yale, Wikimedia Commons and Getty use selected bundled indexes. Version 1.1 includes 2,918 NGA artworks, 1,000 Yale paintings, 277 Commons reproductions and 200 Getty paintings: 4,395 indexed references in total. Other connected museum APIs provide additional search results. These figures describe the app’s selected indexes, not total museum holdings or guaranteed playable images. Collection refresh checks availability and access; full index regeneration occurs during release preparation.
